The Ta Project:
Where language meets the lives it names.
The Ta Project is initiated by Chinese-American artist Victoria Tang. In Mandarin, “ta” (她 / 他) is spoken the same for “she” or “he.” This linguistic ambiguity becomes an entry point into questions of gender, identity, care, struggle, and the ways individuals are seen and understood in different social contexts.
The Ta Project is a growing archive of portraits, brief stories, and field notes—captured both in the stillness of studio tintypes and in the movement of the street. Beginning in New York City, the series will continue to unfold across places and time.
We begin here, looking at how people carry their lives into shared spaces—whether alone or together.

Tintype photography, first popularized in 19th-century America, was once a medium for immortalizing war heroes, statesmen, and those who could afford to be pictured. By photographing people who have historically been left outside that frame, this project turns a historical lens toward a fuller portrait of humanity.
The Ta Project invites people from all walks of life to be photographed and share their stories, whether in moments of care, struggle, resilience, or transformation. Each session is an exchange—through portraits, brief conversations, and reflections, we create a living archive of how we see and understand one another.
*Participation is voluntary, with full respect for your boundaries and consent, and every voice and image becomes part of a cross-cultural dialogue on humanity.
